The reboot is necessary to go into the “before first unlock” state. The goal is to complicate unauthorized access to data on stolen or lost gadgets.

As The Verge writes  , a new security feature for Android smartphones has appeared in the latest update of Google Play services. Its essence is to protect user data from unauthorized access if the device has been lost or stolen. A similar option has already been used in Apple devices, starting with iOS 18.1.

The new feature in Google Play services is reported to be responsible for rebooting the smartphone if it has not been unlocked for 3 days. After rebooting, the device returns to the state “before the first unlock”, in which its data is provided in encrypted form. It will be almost impossible to access them using hacking equipment without entering a password.

It is noted that the security measures will not apply to Android versions designed for wearable smart gadgets (WearOS), smart TVs or cars. The security option will be available only to smartphones and tablets. Also, do not confuse the reboot function with resetting the device to factory settings – the data will not be erased after three days.

It is worth noting that “Restart when idle” has been available for some time on iPhone and iPad with the release of iOS 18.1. However, there the inactivity period is four days. As for the Android platform, the Google Play services update with the new security feature will begin to roll out in the coming months and will be available to all current smartphone/tablet models.
